Patients with severe VVS -Vulvar
Vestibulitis Syndrome- associated with HPV -Human
Papilloma Virus- infections, may benefit from local a-interferon
injections into the affected areas. Discomfort from the injections
is kept at a minimum by numbing the area with 5% Lidocaine gel prior
to using a very fine needle.
Interferon is an anti-viral immunomodulator.
Injections are given twice weekly over 8 weeks.
The full response usually occurs 2 months after the completion of
therapy.
The most common side effects are flu-like symptoms with the first
couple injections.
