Laparoscopy (also referred to as pelviscopy), is an outpatient surgical procedure often used for the evaluation and management of patients with deep pelvic pain or deep dyspareunia.
After inflating the abdomen with CO2 gas, the laparoscope - a thin 5mm diameter viewer- is inserted through a tiny incision in the umbilicus. The pelvic and abdominal organs are then thoroughly examined.
Conditions such as endometriosis, pelvic adhesions, pelvic inflammatory
disease, and pelvic congestion are often diagnosed and treated with
laparoscopy. Endometriosis implants and pelvic adhesions are obliterated
&/or resected with the use of laser or special electrocautery
scissors.
